Veterans' Day Program
What an amazing Veterans' Day program we had! It was awesome to be able to honor our communities' Veterans! It was also very cool to have my classmate and friend be the guest speaker (Lt. Col. Karl Palmberg of the US Air Force)! He spoke of ways we can honor Veterans every day!
We were very fortunate to get a visit from Lloyd Kalfs on Wednesday, April 20th. If you remember, the 4th graders choose to donate their "In lieu of.... " Christmas exchange money to him in order to get a new wheelchair (w/ tracks and w/ the ability to help him stand up). He talked to us about his accident (what caused him to become paralyzed) as well as some of the obstacles and challenges he has had to overcome since then. He also brought along his new (very awesome) wheelchair!!!! It was very moving and very inspiring!!! His main message to the kids was to ALWAYS wear your seatbelt!!!! And to the kids and adults who drive... put your cellphones AWAY!!!!
Congrats to Lillie Beehler (2nd place) and Belle Smidt (1st place) for winning the Farm Bureau poster contest, "Where Does Food Come From?" They each received a gift card to Oak Street Station in Inwood, and their posters and pictures will be in the Iowa Spokesman.
Metric Olympics with Mr. Childress' 7th Grade Math Class
Students had fun going down to Mr. Childress' classroom to participate in 5 events for our Metric Olympics: Cotton Ball Shot Put, Straw Javelin, Standing Broad Jump, Left-handed Sponge Squeeze & Right-handed Marble Grab. Not only was it fun, but it got them out of a day of homework;)
Saying "See you Later" to Bryan:(
Saying "goodbye" to Bryan Gomez on his last day at West Lyon. He will be moving to Rock Valley. Even though we will miss him in our classroom, we know he will fit right in and make lots of new friends at his new school.
Christmas STEM Activity - Use 100 cups to make the tallest "Christmas Tree" possible!
We did this in groups, so we talked about how the last 2 groups to do this had a definite advantage in that they saw the successes (and fails) from the ideas of the other groups! Great job!!!
1st Annual West Lyon Veterans' Day Program
Halloween STEM Activities The kiddos had a lot of fun with a couple of different STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) activities during Math class during Halloween week. One day, they had to build the tallest tower they could from 50 toothpicks, 45 gummy pumpkins, and 45 pieces of candy corn. Another day, we read the story, The Runaway Pumpkin, and the kids had to come up with a hypothesis to the question: Does a pumpkin roll farther if a ramp has a higher incline? T Then they got to "build" their own ramps to test their hypotheses:)
We had an AMAZING time at Camp Foster on Friday, October 9th!
Students were able to split into 6 groups for rifles, archery, canoeing, GaGa ball, horseback riding, and "team building" activities (which included some different kind of kickball). Needless to say, I think this will be a memorable field trip for these 4th graders:)
We had a great time watching the HS band perform their "Legends of Rock" show for us this morning!
Visualizing with The Pirate Don Durk of Dowdee. Students had fun drawing these pictures to go along with the lines of the poem that allowed them to visualize.
